KMP Project Assistant Andrew Jeromski (Framingham ’19; G ’21) has transcribed, edited, and encoded the two prefatory epistles to Thomas Newman’s 1591 edition of Sir Phillip Sidney’s Astrophel & Stella using Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines. This transcription was prepared from a digital edition of STC 22537, available from the Early English Books Online (EEBO) Database. This is the first printed edition of Sidney’s sonnet sequence, Astrophel & Stella. Printer Thomas Newman’s epistle is addressed to Francis Flowers, Esquire. Thomas Nashe wrote the second epistle, addressed to “Somewhat to read for those that list.”

Although Nashe’s epistle has been anthologized, it has never before been offered either as a diplomatic text, or in conversation with Newman’s epistle. Combined, these paratexts offer insight into the conditions of early modern print culture in a way that neither alone can. The text, XML, and metadata is available on Northeastern’s TAPAS (Tei Archiving Publishing and Access Service) site, or you may read the PDF version of this exciting document here! 1 August 2020.
